The English and Media departments at Emerson Park welcome you to our open evening display. We are an active, lively and successful staff who endeavour to make learning informative, engaging and enjoyable. English and Literature are core subjects at GCSE, our policy is to enter as many students as possible for both subjects – leading to two final qualifications in place of one. The departments have their own suite of teaching rooms, and are excellently resourced.
The Curriculum
The Year 7 course builds on the work pupils have undertaken at Key Stage 2, allowing them to progress with confidence and belief in their own abilities. Students are taught in mixed ability groups, following a broad and balanced curriculum tailored to meet students’ individual requirements while equipping them with the necessary skills in Language and Literature to successfully meet the standards required by the National Literacy Strategy.
Key Units include: Study of Shakespeare and the writings of various modern authors; modern and traditional poetry; the influence of the media on cultures and individuals; research and study skills. Pupils will read a variety of text types and are encouraged to express themselves with confidence in a wide range of writing styles. All Year 7 students have timetabled library lessons where they are introduced to different study skills and a wide range of literature. The students in Years 8 and 9 follow a similarly rigorous format. This year 81% of our students achieved a level 5 or above at the end of Key Stage assessments. 30% of these were Level 6 + 7.

At GCSE students follow the AQA syllabus for both English and Media Studies. All pupils are assessed on a combination of coursework and terminal examinations. All our Year 11 students receive detailed revision guides to help them prepare for their examinations, and have access to a comprehensive programme of extra curricular coursework clinics and revision sessions run by the departments.
